Mike Develin

I am a part-time bridge professional who has represented the U.S. internationally multiple times, most recently at the 2007 South American Championships, where I was on the winning U.S. junior team, defeating Argentina A in the finals. You can read about our exploits here.

I have also won many regional knockouts (see the historical record here); knockouts are my favorite form of bridge, but I also do play Swiss Teams and pairs events from time to time. Some highlights in national events include placing 10th in the North American Swiss Teams, winning the GNT Flight B and Red Ribbon Pairs, and placing 51st in the Blue Ribbon Pairs, the hardest event out there. I have various other finishes in the overalls of top-level national eevnts, and have other random achievements like topping my district's Mini-McKenney race three years running. I took an almost complete hiatus from bridge from mid-2008 to 2010 thanks to a job, although I still carved out some time to stay in shape (so to speak).

I used to write a blog for the ACBL at the now-defunct website bridgeiscool.com, and have experience as a bridge instructor as well as a player. Away from the table, I attended Harvard as an undergraduate and have a Ph.D. in mathematics from UC-Berkeley (2003); I did a few years of postdoctoral research, then worked as a quantitative analyst for the hedge fund D.E. Shaw for a few years, and am now self-employed writing software.
