MPS.022 (PAGE 1) ________________ MASTERPOINTS CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS No more than three championship events are permitted during any session of a Sectional or Regional Tournament, except that: 1. A Regional tournament may schedule four championship events on a day where attendance, based primarily on previous attendance records, is expected to 250 tables. A maximum of five championship events may be scheduled on a day with an expected attendance greater than 350 tables. 2. Knockout events are excluded. (See pg.10-13) 3. Concurrent similar open and women's or open and men's events (but not open and mixed) count as only one event. 4. Stratified, flighted and stratiflighted events each count as one event. Masterpoint awards for all events are calculated according to the General Formula. NON-CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS All events are governed by the "R" factor appropriate to the tournament. Events which do not qualify for championship rating by exceeding the number permitted or by being the same as another event that session (side games) are subject to the "M" factor appropriate to the event, with the "M" factor limited to 65%. Side games at NABCs are the same as side games at Regionals. (See Championship Events and Charity Events) CONSOLATION EVENTS Awards for consolation events are computed in the same manner as non-championship events, with the same upper limit applied to the "M" factor. CHARITY EVENTS Any events run to benefit the ACBL charity, or another charity as approved by ACBL regulations, will receive championship rating (not subject to the 65% "M" factor limit). This includes International Fund games. POINT PIGMENTATIONS 1. Events conducted at clubs will award BLACK points (but certain special events at clubs may be given awards of other pigmentation). 2. Unit Championship events generally award BLACK points. 3. All masterpoint awards at Sectional Tournaments are SILVER. 4. All masterpoint awards at Regional Tournaments are RED. Additionally, overall and section top awards in all two (or more) session championship events, with an upper limit of not less than 750 points, are GOLD. When there is a tie for a section top, gold and red points will be shared. (For Stratiflighted Events see pg.7) MPS.022 (PAGE 2) ________________ 5. A maximum of four GOLD point sessions are permitted on the same day. Two session late morning and late afternoon events are deemed to be the same two sessions as two session afternoon and evening events when participation in one precludes participation in the other. Management may, with cause, disallow holding more than 2 GOLD point sessions per day. 6. In NABC+ events, with an upper limit of not less than 750 masterpoints, all awards are GOLD. 7. Unrestricted events and not similarly restricted events held at restricted Regionals or Sectionals (Seniors, 199ers, etc.) award BLACK points only. If part of a sanctioned open Sectional, concurrent with a restricted Regional, SILVER points are awarded. 8. Whenever multiple sections are combined for scoring and ranking, the places paying GOLD session awards are equal to the number of sections combined. (Section sizes must be at least 9 tables.) UNRESTRICTED EVENTS At Regional and Sectional tournaments two session events which are unrestricted in any way (completely open) shall be credited with all tables in play in totally concurrent events (pairs, teams or individual but not knockouts or continuous pairs) [for unrestricted knockouts see below] for the purpose of computing overall awards, up to a maximum total of 3 times the number of tables in play in the unrestricted event. Flighted, Stratified and Stratiflighted events count all tables in all flights/strata to determine the number of tables in the unrestricted event (the A Flight or Stratum). Two or more concurrent unrestricted events share equally the available restricted tables as above but not each others tables. An unrestricted event with a lower limit and no upper limit is treated as an open event when there is no concurrent open event. For the purpose of awarding masterpoints, a restricted event that is two sessions morning and afternoon, is deemed to be totally concurrent with a two session event that is afternoon and evening. However, if a restricted event is scheduled horizontally, it is not deemed to be totally concurrent with a two session vertical event. Unrestricted events of more than two sessions supersede two session events held on the first day of the multi-session event, and shall be credited with the totally concurrent first day (2 session) tables of any type, as above. At Sectional tournaments, one session events which are unrestricted in any way and are not concurrent with either session of a two-session event shall be credited with all tables in play in concurrent events (as above) for the purpose of computing overall awards, up to a maximum total of 3 times the number of tables in play in the unrestricted event. Any two session unrestricted event at a Sectional receives table credit from all restricted events held either totally concurrent or concurrent with the first session, as above. (Board of Directors - Nov, 1998) NOTE: For Knockout teams see page 12. MPS.022 (PAGE 3) ________________ COMPACT KNOCKOUTS A bracketed knockout event in which each match is half the normal length (i.e., at least twelve and probably not more than fourteen boards) is an approved tournament event. This event shall be permitted at Sectionals, for silver points, and at Regionals for red and gold points (a minimum of 9 teams is necessary to award gold points). The formula for masterpoints, including the factor for the number of boards in the match and the reduction for concurrent knockout events (when applicable), shall be used to determine the masterpoint awards. Additionally, in order to receive an overall award, a team must play two complete sessions (four matches). In brackets with an original entry of nine or more teams, the losing semifinalist must play off (producing a clear third place and a clear fourth place) in order to meet this requirement. In an event with an original entry of five through eight teams, the final match shall be of full length. In an event with an original entry of three or four teams, all matches shall be of full length. The depth of awards shall be limited to four places with an original entry of nine or more teams, to two places with an original entry of five through eight teams, and to one place with an original entry of three or four teams. No playoff matches for additional overall awards shall be permitted. Sanction fees shall be collected as for one session zip knockouts, i.e., the number of entries sold times the length of match (expressed as a fraction of a full length match). For example, an event with an original entry of sixteen teams will sell thirty-two entries (16=8=4=4). Each match is « of a full length match -- 32 x .5 = 16 tables for sanction fees. GOLD POINTS FOR FILL-IN PAIRS Pairs filling in for one session of a two session event receive any gold points earned. ABA MEMBERS Effective March 30, 1995 an ABA member who joins ACBL for the first time will receive 10% of his total ABA points as a credit in ACBL black points to a maximum of 200 points. (Board of Directors - November, 1994) For purposes of seeding, handicapping, eligibility to masterpoint limited events, etc., American Bridge Association (ABA) points will be converted to ACBL points at the ratio of two (2) ABA points to one (1) ACBL masterpoint and added to the player's ACBL masterpoints. An ABA Life Master will be treated as an ACBL Life Master when it involves any of the items in #1 above(Board of Directors-July,1991) NOTE: All current members of the ABA that are not now, or, have not been a member of ACBL for at least five years and who meet other eligibility requirements, may purchase a one (1) year membership to ACBL for $10 or its Canadian equivalent including CBF fees. Silver points will be earned at events held at Sectional tournaments. Silver points shall be awarded at all Sectional-rated games held in Bermuda and West Germany. NON-MEMBERS OF ACBL PLAYING IN EVENTS LIMITED BY MASTERPOINTS The right of a non-member of ACBL to play in an event restricted by masterpoints is subject to approval by the DIC of that tournament. NOTE: The spirit of this policy is to insure that players do not enter events for which they are over (or under) qualified. (Office Policy 3/91) MASTERPOINT ELIGIBILITY FOR FLIGHTS AND STRATS The DIC of an ACBL sanctioned tournament may require an ACBL member to enter a Flight, Strat, or Bracket above that dictated by his ACBL masterpoint holding if the member is deemed to have equivalent bridge experience. The DIC may require a non-member to enter a Flight, Strat or Bracket equivalent to that non-members past bridge experience. The DIC may require any entrant who is a member of another NCBO to play in Flight A if a lower status is not confirmed by the other NCBO. Units and Districts have the same authority regarding NAOP and GNT participation at any level under their jurisdiction. (Board of Directors - November, 1998) FLIGHT ELIGIBILITY OF PAIRS THAT HAVE REPRESENTED THEIR COUNTRY IN WBF EVENTS Non-ACBL members who have represented their country in WBF World Championship events organized by the WBF, when playing in ACBL stratified or flighted events, they are required to play in Flight A. Players may request exemption from this rule for valid cause. (Board of Directors - March 1991) EVENT RESTRICTION ON PLAYERS WHO EARN MP STATUS No member, having once achieved an ACBL masterpoint ranking, may thereafter participate in any event, or receive any award, intended for players of a lower ranking, except as specifically authorized in other ACBL regulations. (This regulation allows a director to disqualify a former member from a limited event who is returning to play after a long hiatus.) (Board of Directors - July 1984) MPS.022 (PAGE 6) ________________ EVENTS AT NABCS Awards for NABC Championship Events are either computed from the General Formula or arbitrary as per regulation. The formula includes factor, depth of award and length of event. The depth of the overall is governed by the absolute limit. (See Absolute Limit of Overall Awards pg.7) Masterpoints for all other events, including unrestricted events, played at NABCs are computed as if they were being conducted at a Regional Tournament. In NABC+ events, with an upper limit of not less than 750 masterpoints, all awards are GOLD. The regulation that limits the number of Regional Championships does not apply to NABCs. For this event-type only the upper three strats in a regional event award gold points for overall and section tops as long as the upper limit of each is at least 750 masterpoints. (A, X, B) IV. Session and Overall Masterpoints A. Session masterpoint awards for all strats are calculated using the appropriate "M" factor and the number of pairs in the comparison group. MPS.022 (PAGE 11) _________________ B. Overall awards for the unlimited strat A are calculated using the general formula based on the total number of tables in play in all strats plus additional tables as described above. C. For stratiflighted events, the X strat receives overall masterpoint awards as follows: If the event meets a threshold of either (1) 20 or more actual tables entered in X or (2) 40% or more of the A + X Field entered in X, then the first place X award is the greater of 105% of the Flight B awards, or the awards based on X only. If the event does not meet this threshold, then X receives the greater of: a. ((X/.4(A + X)))^2) x 105% of Flight B award (^2 = squared) OR b. ((X/20)^2) x 105% of Flight B award OR c. Award based on X tables only. D. The depth of the X award shall be a maximum of 35% of the X field. For one and two session events the awards for 2nd thru 8th place are 75% of the previous award. The awards for 9th, etc. are A/n. (n = place) For events of three or more sessions, 2nd and 3rd are as above, 4th place and beyond are computed using the following formula: Ap = A x Ns / (P + (2Ns - 3)) (Ap = Award for place) where P is the overall position and Ns is the number of sessions in the event. ABSOLUTE LIMIT OF OVERALL AWARDS The following is an absolute limit on the depth of all overall awards: One Session ..... 25 places Four Sessions ......... 50 places Two Sessions .... 40 places Five Sessions ......... 55 places Three Sessions .. 45 places Six or more Sessions .. 60 places NOTE: THE FOLLOWING CHART IS FOR ILLUSTRATION - THE NUMBERS HAVE BEEN ROUNDED. The depth of the award is at least 5% of the field or the formula, whichever is greater, up to a maximum of 35% of the field, subject to the absolute limit on overall awards. (For Individual and Swiss see pg.9&10) SESSION AWARDS 0.50 x B x M x R x P x T Award for 2nd position = 0.70 of first position Award for 3rd position = 0.50 of first position Award for 4th position = 0.35 of first position Awards for 5th and lower = First position divided by position being computed Depth of session awards 40% rounded (up if .5 or more - down if less than .5 .) FLIGHTED PAIRS All awards in flighted pair events are computed according to the General Formula using the appropriate "M" values (for both overall and session awards) and the number of tables in each flight. Flights receive credit for all tables in that flight plus all tables in lower flights. For events with 10 or more tables overall awards in any flight are limited to 35% of the actual competitors in that flight. The Flight A masterpoint award is arbitrarily placed at 10% above that of Flight B whenever the General Formula yields a Flight A award lower than that. STRATIFIED EVENTS Masterpoints for stratified events are computed using the General Formula, the appropriate "M" factor, and the actual number of tables in each stratum plus all tables in lower strata. The lowest stratum must have at least three tables to be eligible for overall awards and at least three competitors in direct comparison to be eligible for session awards. STRATIFLIGHTED EVENTS Flight A may be stratified into two strats provided that the limit of the lower A strat is at least 500 points higher than the limit of the flight below. (For overall awards in A and X, see page 4&5) SIDE GAME SERIES (CONTINUOUS PAIRS) Overall awards are computed at 80% of a two session event using the average of the two largest sessions. Session awards are computed at 100%. Each session will award (single session) overall awards and session awards at 65%. Each individual session may be stratified. MPS.022 (PAGE 15) _________________ BAROMETER FINAL Top Level (Barometer, IMPs, etc.) Awards are based on the total number of tables originally entered as a two session Regional rated championship event. Second Level Awards are based on the total number of tables in this level as a two session Regional rated championship event using an 80% "M" factor. Third Level Awards are based on the number of tables in this level as a one session Regional rated non-championship event using the 65% "M" factor. (same as a Consolation) INDIVIDUAL Awards - Same formulas as for a pair event. Depth of overall awards 2 tables = 3 places, 3 tables = 4 places, 4 tables = 5 places, 5 or more tables = 6 places, and, The limiting factor on additional overall positions will be according to 0.2 *R *M *P. The depth of the award is at least 5% of the field or the formula, whichever is greater, up to a maximum of 35% of the field, subject to the absolute limit on overall awards. (See Absolute Limit of Overall Awards pg.7) B-A-M TEAMS Awards - Same formulas as for a pair event. TEAM-OF-TWO PAIRS Overall and session awards are computed as in B-A-M Teams but using a "T" factor of 1.00. SWISS TEAMS Overall awards - Same formulas as for a pair event. Overall awards to players on five or six person teams will be based on the percentage participation for one and two session events. In events of 3 or more sessions all eligible players receive full overall awards. Match awards are computed using the knockout match award formula. (D x L x M x P) Flighted and Stratiflighted Swiss events award points according to the conditions outlined (above) for flighted and stratiflighted respectively. In a Stratified Swiss match awards are computed using the masterpoint limits of the highest stratum. Consolations of Swiss Team Events - Overall awards are calculated according to the General Formula ("M" limited to 65%). Match awards are the same as in the finals. To be eligible for overall awards players must play at least half the matches in the consolation. MPS.022 (PAGE 16) _________________ Depth of Awards 3-4 = 1 place, 5-6 = 2 places, 7-8 = 3 places, 9-12 = 4 places, 13-18 = 5 places, 19+ = 6 places, or, The number of overall places is determined by the General Formula or by 10% of the field (rounded up) whichever is greater, up to 35% of the field (i.e., 35% of each flight, stratum or entire open event) subject to the absolute limit on overall awards. For flights of 19 or more teams overall awards are limited to 35% of the actual competitors in each flight. BRACKETED SWISS TEAMS For bracketed Swiss teams events, the number of tables upon which the masterpoint award is based as follows: 1. The top bracket is based on the sum of its own table plus 100% of up to 40 tables in lower brackets and 1/3 of tables in excess of 40. 2. The second bracket is based on its own tables plus 100% of up to 20 tables in lower brackets, and 1/3 of tables in excess of 20. 3. The third bracket (and any lower bracket) masterpoints will be based on its own tables plus 1/3 of the tables in any still lower bracket. (Board of Directors - March, 2000) KNOCKOUT TEAMS KO General Formula: FIRST OVERALL = B x K x L x M x P MATCH AWARD = D x L x M x P K and D are a function of the rating of the event. L is based on the number of boards played in a match. 1/2 match awards are 1/2 of the full match award, 1/4 match awards are 1/4...etc., regardless of the number of boards played. The 80% age and/or gender remains in effect. (Board of Directors - March, 2000) Playoffs for additional overall awards are permitted, at sponsor option, whenever the number of overalls allowed under the two match restriction would be less than that given by: 3 - 7 teams: 1 position (playoffs not permitted) 8 - 15 teams: 4 positions 16 - 31 teams: 8 positions 32 - and over: 16 positions All winning teams in such playoffs will be deemed tied for the next spot. (3/4, 5/8, etc.) But, winners of a playoff match for 3/4 usually in a bracket with an original entry of 8 teams only) will receive 22.50% of the first place award, not 40%. Whenever a team(s) forfeits a match, it receives the overall masterpoint award equivalent to that of the team it beat in its previous match. MPS.022 (PAGE 18) _________________ For example: a team that fails to play in the finals would receive the masterpoint award for 3/4. BRACKETED AND FLIGHTED KNOCKOUT TEAMS In Regional Bracketed KO teams, the percentage of gold for overalls is as follows: The top bracket always awards 100% gold. In lower brackets, the percentage of gold awarded for overalls is determined by the average masterpoint holding of all players on the top team in each bracket, on the following scale: average MP holding pigmentation of award 750+ 100% gold 500-750 2/3 gold, 1/3 red 300-500 1/2 gold, 1/2 red 0-300 1/3 gold, 2/3 red. In Regional Flighted KO Teams, the second Flight is 100% gold if it is 0-750 or higher, and the third group awards no gold at all. Flighted/Bracketed KOs award gold as other flighted/bracketed events. In Regional Bracketed KO Teams, the M value used in determining the masterpoints awarded to the top bracket is 1.00. The M value table will be used in determining masterpoints awarded to each lower bracket, based on the average masterpoint holding of the top team in that bracket. If the masterpoint holding falls between two values in the table of M values, the lower number from the table is used. When determining the based-on number of teams for masterpoints in a KO bracket, if the average masterpoint holding of the top team in the bracket is at least 500 MPs, credit shall be given for: all teams in that bracket; 1/3 of the teams in all lower brackets (or other restricted KO events, for the top bracket only), up to an additional 100 teams; and 1/5 of the teams after that. Any bracket where the average masterpoint holding of the top team is less than 500 masterpoints per player will receive credit for the teams in its own bracket, plus teams from lower brackets on the following scale: MP avg of highest team percentage of teams in lower brackets added to own bracket for based-on number 500+ .3333 (as above) 450-500 .3000 (90% of above) 400-450 .2500 (75%) 350-400 .1667 (50%) 300-350 .0667 (20%) 250-300 .0333 (10%) 200-250 .0167 (05%) 0-200 own group only The based-on tables and overall percentage awards for a Flighted KO event are determined by the same criteria as those for a Bracketed KO. MPS.022 (PAGE 19) _________________ In cases of bracketed KO's with fewer than 48 teams, the DIC may exercise some latitude in breaking the field into brackets. SPLIT REGIONALS First and second overall in Gold point pair events are based on total attendance at the two sites. The masterpoint awards for these positions are the higher of: 1) 80% of the award based on combined attendance or 2) 100% of the award based on attendance at the individual location. Awards for lower overall positions are based on the single site attendance. All awards for KO and Swiss team events are based on single site attendance. See Techfiles for more details on Split Regionals.
